What is Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC)?
Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) is a specialised diagnostic procedure commonly used to examine lumps in the neck, including thyroid gland, parotid glands and lymph nodes. It involves using a thin needle and a syringe to pull out cells, tissue and fluids.
During the process, an ENT specialist would identify the area of concern, which might involve palpating the neck to locate the lesion or using ultrasound imaging for more accurate localisation. The skin over the lesion is then cleaned, and a local anaesthetic may be applied to minimise discomfort. A fine, hollow needle would be gently inserted, and suction is applied via an attached syringe to aspirate (suck out) cells and fluid from the lesion.
FNAC is performed within the confines of a clinic setting and may or may not involve local anaesthesia to ensure patient comfort throughout the diagnostic procedure.
