What is Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)?
Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a specialised procedure used to evaluate a patient’s swallowing function. It involves the use of a thin, flexible endoscope equipped with a miniature camera and connected to a stroboscopic light source. This instrument is gently inserted through the nostril to provide a detailed view of the nasal cavity, nasopharynx (located at the back of the nose), oropharynx, and hypopharynx (the entire length of the throat) before focusing on the swallowing mechanism.
During the swallowing test, the patient is provided with food and liquids of various consistencies to swallow, with the endoscope in place within the nasal passage. This procedure allows the ENT specialist to closely observe the patient’s swallowing process, identifying any abnormalities or conditions that may cause dysphagia (difficulty swallowing).
This procedure is typically conducted within the confines of a clinic setting without local anaesthesia, as maintaining normal sensation in the nose and throat is necessary for an accurate assessment of the swallowing function. Registered as a day-surgery procedure, this treatment is eligible for reimbursement through Medisave or your personal insurance.
