What is Video-stroboscopy?
Video-stroboscopy is a specialised procedure designed to examine the voice box. It involves the use of a thin, flexible endoscope equipped with a miniature camera and connected to a stroboscopic light source. The scope is gently inserted through the nostril to provide a detailed view of the nasal cavity, nasopharynx (located at the back of the nose), oropharynx, hypopharynx (the entire length of the throat), and ultimately, the vocal cords.
During the video-stroboscopic examination, patients are instructed to produce various vocal sounds, allowing the ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist to assess the movement and function of the vocal cords in detail. The stroboscopic light source synchronises with the patient’s vocalisations, creating a slow-motion effect that enables accurate observation of vocal cord vibration. This detailed examination helps diagnose voice disorders such as nodules, polyps, and paralysis. Once the diagnosis is made, an appropriate treatment plan will be prescribed to address the underlying condition and improve voice quality and function.
This procedure is performed within a clinic and may or may not involve local anaesthesia to ensure patient comfort throughout the procedure. Registered as a day-surgery procedure, this treatment is eligible for reimbursement through Medisave or your personal insurance.
